A l'occasion d'un passage dans les Alpes-Maritimes, j'ai eu la chance de découvrir la fondation Maeght,
à deux pas de la célèbre cité médiévale de Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
De plus, cette année elle célèbre ses 50 ans !
Elle est l'unique fondation privée en Europe et inaugurée en 1964 par André Malraux.
Cet ensemble architectural a été entièrement conçu et financé par Aimé et Marguerite Maeght pour
présenter l'art moderne et contemporain sous toutes ses formes.
Des peintres et des sculpteurs ont étroitement collaboré à cette réalisation avec l'architecte catalan
Josep Lluís Sert en créant des oeuvres, souvent monumentales, intégrées au bâtiment et aux jardins:
la cour Giacometti, le labyrinthe Miró, peuplé de sculptures et céramiques, les mosaïques murales de
Chagall et de Tal-Coat, le bassin et le vitrail de Braque, le chemin de croix et le vitrail d'Ubac, la fontaine
de Bury...
La fondation Maeght est un véritable musée dans la nature et elle possède l'une des plus importantes
collections en Europe de peintures, sculptures, dessins et oeuvres graphiques d'art moderne du 20ème
siècle (Bonnard, Braque, Calder, Chagall, Chillida, Giacometti, Léger, Miró, Ubac...) et d'artistes
contemporains (Adami, Calzolari, Caro, Del Re, Dietman, Kelly, Mitchell, Monory, Oh Sufan, Takis,
Tàpies...).
On the occasion of a passage in the Alpes-Maritimes, I had chance to discover the Maeght Foundation,
a few steps from the famous medieval town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
In addition, this year it celebrates its 50th anniversary !
It is the only private foundation in Europe and inaugurated in 1964 by André Malraux.
This architectural ensemble was entirely conceived and financed by Aimé and Marguerite Maeght to
present modern and contemporary art in all its forms.
Painters and sculptors collaborated closely in the realization of this Foundation with Catalan architect Josep
Lluís Sert by creating frequently monumental works, integrated into the building and gardens: the Giacometti
courtyard, the Miró labyrinth, filled with sculptures and ceramics, the mural mosaics by Chagall and Tal-Coat,
the pool and stained glass window by Braque, the way of cross and stained glass window by Ubac, the Bury
Fountain...
Fondation Maeght is a true museum in nature and it contains one of the most important collections in Europe
with paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic works of modern art from the 20th century (Bonnard,
Braque, Calder, Chagall, Chillida, Giacometti, Léger, Miró, Ubac...) and contemporary artists (Adami, Calzolari,
Caro, Del Re, Dietman, Kelly, Mitchell, Monory, Oh Sufan, Takis, Tàpies ...).
